Quinn looking for born winner

Niall Quinn has highlighted the credentials he will be looking for in candidates for the Sunderland job.

The Black Cats have begun their search for a new boss following Ricky Sbragia's decision to stand down at the end of the 2008/09 campaign.

No shortlist has been drawn up as yet, but that has no stopped the rumour mill from throwing out a number of potential options.

Chairman Quinn, though, has made it clear that he will not be rushed into making a rash appointment and is keen to investigate all possible avenues.

With American investor Ellis Short expected to complete his takeover of the club later this week, any new recruit is likely to be handed a sizeable transfer kitty.

It is therefore imperative that a manager with considerable experience is identified, as well as one that can help carry the club forward in the future.

Asked what specifically he is looking for after Sunday's 3-2 home defeat by Chelsea, Quinn said: "A winning mentality.

"I believe we have got a lot of talent in that dressing room.

"At times, I had to ask myself during the Bolton game, at times during the Portsmouth game and once or twice yesterday, what are we doing at the bottom of the league?

"But then there were times when I realised why we were.

"We need somebody who will come in and alter that and attract the type of player that Sunderland needs.

"We don't need frilly players here, we need proper men, and I think a big manager can bring us that type of player."

This is the second time in the space of six months that Quinn has been forced into the market for a new manager, with Roy Keane having walked away from the Stadium of Light towards the end of last year.

He admits the quality of candidates back then was not what he had hoped for, but the Irishman is confident he can land a big name this time around.

"We had applicants from all over the world at Christmas, but the gospel truth is - and being kind to people - I hadn't heard of half of them," he said.

"But I think it will be different this time."
