West Brom boss Tony Mowbray will have no qualms about throwing Marek Cech into action this weekend.
With regular left-back Paul Robinson struggling with an ankle problem, the Slovakia international is in line to make just his third Premier League appearance of the season against Wigan on Saturday.
The Baggies are still awaiting the results of a scan on Robinson's knock and are keen to have plans in place should the combative full-back fail to recover in time for a visit from the Latics.
Mowbray is confident Cech could be the man to fill the void, despite the 26-year-old having been left frustrated on the sidelines for much of the current campaign.
"Marek is a player at our club that, when he's had an opportunity, has done very well for us. He has been very unfortunate in the fact that I've chosen Paul Robinson at left-back rather than him," he said.
"Whether he agrees with it or is happy with it - that's been the scenario.
"If Paul isn't available then Marek is naturally the next choice but we'll wait and see what Paul's prognosis is."
Mowbray admitted: "There's an obvious disappointment from Marek about his current situation. But he's a contracted footballer who works hard in training and maintains his fitness.
"When an opportunity for him to play comes along he's got to perform. That's the same with a lot of players on the outside of the team.
"They've got to work hard to keep pushing - and Marek is no different."
West Brom skipper Jonathan Greening is also of the opinion that Cech would not let anybody down should he be awarded a rare start against Wigan.
He said: "Robbo is a massive player for us but I am sure Marek will be ready to step back in no problem if required.
"He has been waiting in the wings but when that happens you just have to work hard in training and wait for an opportunity."
