Tony Pulis has admitted that losing Mamady Sidibe for the rest of the season would be a big blow.
The Stoke striker suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury during the warm-up for last week's reserve match against Aston Villa.
He has discussed the best course of action with the club, his agent and more than one knee specialist.
The Mali international considered resting for a few weeks to allow him to possibly return before the end of the season, but it now seems he is set to opt for surgery.
Having an operation would keep Sidibe out for a longer period and he may not be able to play any part in Stoke's battle against relegation.
Pulis concedes the Potters would struggle in his absence but believes he should go under the knife if that is what he wants to do.
"Mama feels there is a weakness in the knee joint that he's obviously not happy with," Pulis told Why Delilah.
"He hasn't felt fully right in the games he's played since coming back from his last injury to the knee.
"That will trouble him because Mama is one of those who always wants to give you 100 per cent.
"I think everyone following us this season has seen the way Mama has stepped up to the challenge of the Premier League.
"He gives us something different and will be a big miss, but not an insurmountable one."
