Sir Alex Ferguson concedes Cristiano Ronaldo has been affected by 'temptations', but believes the winger responds to Manchester United's honesty.
Ronaldo's rise to fame since his £12.24million switch from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 has been dramatic.
The Portugal international had a stunning 2008, netting a remarkable 42 goals last season, and he was named the FIFA World Player of the Year.
Ronaldo's form this season, however, has not been as spectacular, following interest from Real Madrid last summer, but Red Devils manager Ferguson believes the club's approach has kept the 24-year-old focused.
"I think that he's had temptations and I think there have been periods when you've seen the effect of it (on the pitch)," Ferguson told CNN.
"He's lucky in the sense that people here can tell him the truth and be straight with him and he appreciates that, and he has responded to that."
He continued: "There have been periods with young players - they all like to read their own press - they all like that they're not different from anyone else.
"If it stays with him and changes him as a person then you have a problem. Fortunately Ronaldo has good human qualities. He's a good guy.
"He knows when he's gone too far and he draws back in after that."
