Enrique sets return date

Newcastle defender Jose Enrique has targeted the St James' Park visit of Portsmouth as the date to make his return from injury.

The full-back missed last weekend's draw at Stoke, which saw Alan Shearer collect the first point of his eight-game managerial tenure, after damaging his knee in training.

Shearer inherited a host of fitness concerns when he agreed to take over as the Magpies' boss at the beginning of April and he is desperate for reinforcements in the battle against Premier League relegation

Enrique will miss Sunday's trip to Tottenham, which can be seen live on Sky Sports 1 and HD1, but he has handed his manager a boost by announcing that he hopes to be fit to face Portsmouth, who are not safe from the drop, on 27th April.

"This was a bad time to get injured because the team needs every player," the Spaniard told Newcastle's official website. "But now I hope to be back for maybe the Portsmouth game.

"For me it is disappointing because before I got injured I was playing well and had confidence.

"But now I have to get fit for the remaining games and get back to the way I was playing."

The former Villarreal player has also revealed the strict impact Shearer has had on the Newcastle squad, who occupy the final place in the relegation zone and sit two points from safety.

"He has come in and brought many rules and I think that is good because the team need discipline," he added.
