Andy Carroll is hoping to be given a chance in the Newcastle United team by new manager Alan Shearer.
The young striker, who signed a new contract at St James' Park last month, appeared as a late substitute in Shearer's first match in charge against Chelsea on Saturday.
Carroll then pressed his claims to feature against Stoke City this weekend by scoring twice for the reserves against Manchester City on Monday night.
He was watched by Shearer for the reserves and is happy to be back in action after overcoming his recent fitness troubles.
"Hopefully I will get a chance between now and the end of the season," said Carroll.
"All I have got to do is keep working hard on my fitness. I have had a couple of injury problems in the past few weeks, and it's good to be back."
Shearer was impressed by Carroll's display for the second string and admits the forward has given him food for thought ahead of the trip to the Britannia Stadium.
The Magpies boss said: "I asked Andy to go out and show me what he could do, and he did that.
"Like all of the lads who came from the first team, he showed a great appetite and a great attitude."
