Newcastle 1 - 3 Arsenal

Share Arsenal cemented their fourth place and dumped Newcastle further into the relegation mire with a 3-1 win at St James' Park.

After an entertaining but goalless first period, which saw Obafemi Martins' penalty saved, the Gunners went ahead when Nicklas Bentdnar headed home an Andrey Arshavin free-kick in the 57th minute.

But Newcastle equalised almost immediately when Martins capitalised on poor Arsenal defending to score.

But the Gunners then re-took the lead in the 64th minute when Abou Diaby played a one-two with Robin van Persie before slotting home.

Samir Nasri then scored three minutes later to seal the win, while Diaby hit the post in injury time.

The result which leaves Arsenal three points clear in fourth and Newcastle two points adrift of safety.

Michel Owen could not prevent Newcastle from slipping deep into relegation trouble as the England striker, who started the game on the bench, arrived just in time to see the Gunners establish a 3-1 lead at St James' Park, and there was little he or anyone else in a black and white shirt could do about it.

It might have been different had Martins converted a 23rd-minute penalty - which Owen would have taken had he started - but Manuel Almunia kept out his spot-kick to provide the platform for a clinical second-half display.
