Mowbray backing Carson

Tony Mowbray insists his goalkeeper Scott Carson is not suffering from a crisis of confidence despite West Brom's struggles.

With the Baggies seven points from safety at the bottom of the Premier League the 23-year-old faces the possibility of getting relegated for the second time in three seasons.

The former Liverpool shot-stopper suffered the drop while on loan at Charlton in 2007 and is desperate not to have to go through it again.

But with just eight games remaining and the fact that Mowbray's side haven't tasted success for eight matches an immediate return to the Championship looks likely.

The Baggies also possess the worst defensive record in the league, having conceded 55 goals in 30 games, but Mowbray insists his No.1 is not affected and believes he can improve.

"I don't think Scott is suffering from any lack of confidence," the former Hibernian boss said.

"He understands our team and the way we play and he gets on with it. He makes good saves.

"We are trying to stamp our own print on Scott as a goalkeeper really and change a few things about our game.

"Like all the outfield players, he is trying to take them on board. Sometimes you've got to overcome a bit of resistance to some of the things you ask them to do.

"Yet if he keeps persevering, I'd like to think we can improve him as a goalkeeper."
