Kuyt hopes for United stumble

Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt hopes Saturday's 4-1 thrashing of Manchester United will have knocked the defending champions off balance on their Premier League perch.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez recorded his first win at Old Trafford in sensational style on Saturday lunchtime as his side came from behind to inflict a devastating defeat on their arch North-West rivals.

The victory, United's only home league defeat of the season to date, has reignited the title race by offering Liverpool and Chelsea a chink of a chance of catching Sir Alex Ferguson's men, whose table-topping lead has been cut to four points.

And while Kuyt accepts that reeling in United - who still posses a game in hand - remains a daunting prospect, the Dutchman feels the weekend's events are reason for optimism.

"This result is a huge lift to the players," he told Liverpool's official website.

"It will still be very difficult to catch them. If they win their game in hand it'll be seven points, but all we can do is win our own games.

"They have to struggle now and hopefully they will do after this result. We beat them 4-1, so they're not so happy - let's hope they take this into the next game."
