Hiddink - Win was difficult

Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink was happy to escape with three points from his team's Premier League clash with out-of-form Wigan.

The Latics entered the match having not won in six games but started brightly and then found their way back into the game after John Terry had put Chelsea ahead.

Hiddink praised his opposition's fight, revealing that winning his third game in charge did not turn out to be an easy task.

"We are very happy with the wins although it was a difficult win today against a very, very decent Wigan," he said.

"They played very well, they gave us a hard time."

Wigan manager Steve Bruce was sure that Chelsea's winner should not have stood after Frank Lampard appeared to push Mario Melchiot as he rose to head the ball.

But Hiddink brushed off the claims, claiming that a foul on Michael Ballack seconds earlier also went unpunished.

"There were a lot of duels in both boxes," he said.

"There was always a little bit of pushing and fighting but if you go to this specific situation there might be contact.

"But then you can also dispute the contact in the box two seconds before when Michael Ballack headed towards Frank Lampard when he was also pushed a little bit on his shoulder which is normally not whistled by the referee as well.

"If you dispute one then you have to dispute the other one as well."

Chelsea's win moved them up to second position in the Premier League, ahead of Liverpool and seven points behind Manchester United having played a game more.

The Dutch manager insists his side will fight for the title until it is no longer attainable, but played down his side's chances.

"Let's be realistic," he added.

"We are depending on the loss of points of Man U and then we must make our own goals as well and win our games but as long as it is possible we don't give up."
