Beye ready for relegation fight

Fit-again Habib Beye insists he is ready to play his part in Newcastle's battle for Premier League survival.

The Senegal international defender suffered ankle ligament damage against Wigan on Boxing Day with initial reports suggesting he could be out for four months.

But Beye defied the odds and returned to action as a second-half substitute in Saturday's 3-1 home defeat by Arsenal at St James' Park.

That reverse, coupled with Stoke's win over Middlesbrough earlier in the day, plunged the Magpies into the relegation zone with just eight games of the season remaining.

High-flying Chelsea are the next visitors to the North East after the international break before the Toon Army travel to the Britannia Stadium to tackle the Potters.

Beye has urged his team-mates to focus purely on picking up points in each of their eight remaining fixtures and insists he is ready to play his part.

He told the club's official website: "We have eight games and 24 points to play for.

"It doesn't matter who we play, we must try to get points from every game to save the club because that is all that's important.

"For me, I have been out for a long time but I feel good and will use the break to work on my condition.

"I have to be ready to play every game and I will be ready.

"It is a bonus for me to be able to play because we thought I would be out for longer.

"Now I am back I will be doing all I can to save this club."
