Newcastle United striker Alan Smith has given Joe Kinnear some much needed cheer as he declared himself available for first-team duty after an injury-ravaged season.
Smith has not figured for the Magpies this campaign after fracturing his ankle in pre-season but made a successful return in the reserves last week.
The striker will be looking to open his scoring account for United if selected after failing to find the net in his debut season, but explained the injury was much worse than had initially been thought in the summer.
"I had a fracture which, in layman's terms, is a broken ankle. There was also a ligament reattachment on the outside so it was a very serious injury," he told the club's official website.
"Six months was the schedule but then there was a bit of confusion and it was reported that I had an Achilles problem but that was never the case.
"I've worked hard during the past six months or so and my thanks go to the physios for their help in getting me where I am today."
The ex-Leeds and Manchester United player is now aiming to play a part in the proverbial six-pointer basement clash at West Brom this weekend.
"My aim was to get through 60 minutes for the reserves so I was delighted to do that and at the end I didn't want to come off.
"West Brom is now the target for me."
