Sbragia targeted Bent bid

Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia has admitted that he was interested in bringing Tottenham striker Darren Bent to the club.

With the impending return of Robbie Keane likely to push the 24-year-old further down the pecking order at Spurs reports had linked him with a switch to Wearside.

The Black Cats were thought to be prepared to bid £10million for the England international but in the end no deal materialised.

Sbragia admitted that the club were monitoring the situation but added that chairman Niall Quinn was dealing with the matter.

"I haven't really had much to do with that one," he told the Sunderland Echo.

"We were interested in him, but we weren't certain whether he was going to become available.

"Niall Quinn was involved in that one far more than I was.

"But I think maybe the Robbie Keane deal came through too late and maybe Spurs just decided they wanted to keep him."

Meanwhile Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has insisted that Bent has a future at White Hart Lane despite the return of Keane and Jermain Defoe.

Bent scored both goals in Saturday's 3-2 defeat at Bolton and his manager is hoping for more of the same.

"If Darren plays as he did on Saturday then he's going to be very important to us," the former Portsmouth manager confirmed.
