Everton boss David Moyes fears Mikel Arteta suffered a serious knee injury during the goalless draw with Newcastle.
Arteta was stretchered off after just three minutes of the game at St James' Park after landing awkwardly on his right knee in a challenge with Peter Lovenkrands.
The Spanish midfielder appeared to be in agony when leaving the pitch and he has returned to Liverpool to undergo scans on the injury.
Moyes admits the initial assesment does not look good for Arteta and is waiting to find out the full extent of the problem.
"Losing Mikel is probably the biggest blow of it all," Moyes told Sky Sports 1.
"I am concerned. The news I'm getting at the moment isn't great news.
"The early look at him wasn't good, but I'd rather wait to see.
"We played for nearly an hour against 10 men and created hardly any chances.
"A draw's not a bad result, but I think in the circumstances we're disappointed not to take all three and bitterly disappointed because of the injury to Mikel."
