Newcastle have confirmed that Joe Kinnear will undergo a triple heart bypass operation on Friday.
The Magpies manager was taken to hospital on Saturday morning after feeling unwell and assistant boss Chris Hughton took charge for the match against West Brom.
Kinnear remained in good spirits and hoped to return to the training ground as quickly as possible.
But tests later revealed that surgery would be required and Kinnear will need at least two months to recover.
Hughton and Colin Calderwood, who joined the coaching staff in January, will therefore remain at the Newcastle helm.
"Newcastle United can confirm that manager Joe Kinnear will undergo a triple heart bypass operation tomorrow," read a statement on the club's official website.
"Joe was admitted to hospital on Saturday morning in the midlands after reporting feeling unwell at the team's hotel ahead of the game at West Bromwich Albion.
"Tests have since confirmed Joe requires surgery, after which he will need to rest for a period of at least eight weeks."
