Hart happy to help

Paul Hart insists he is willing to oversee first-team duties at Portsmouth for as long as he is required.

The former Nottingham Forest boss, and Pompey's academy director, has taken the reins at Fratton Park on a caretaker basis following the recent sacking of Tony Adams.

The search for a permanent successor to Adams is currently ongoing, with no indication as to how long that process will take.

Hart put himself in contention for the role with a 2-0 victory over Manchester City on Saturday, his first game in charge, and will continue to do his utmost to help the side pull clear of the Premier League relegation zone until the managerial situation is resolved.

"The win was important for everybody, players, club, supporters, but now we've got to build on it," Hart told The News.

"The way the Premier League is you'll find yourself back in the same spot two weeks later.

"Everybody was desperate for a win but we have to go on and do a bit more.

"I think to get it out of our system is a massive thing and the players now know they can defend and keep clean sheets.

"I think it's something that can be built upon as long as the attitude and commitment stays the same.

'In fairness, the players were absolutely superb, every one of them, and what they've got to find out is that you should come off the football pitch absolutely shattered - and they were. They put a shift in.

"I'm not sure how long I'll be in charge but we're planning for next week, doing the training programme, and we'll see what happens.

"But it isn't just me and Brian (Kidd) who have worked hard this week, there's Paul Groves, Guy Whittingham, Ian Woan and Dave Coles - we have all stuck in there.

"It's not in my hands. I was asked to step in at a difficult moment and I am happy to do that."
