Cahill slams 'terrible' Bolton

Gary Cahill has admitted that Bolton turned in an extremely poor performance against Everton on Saturday.

The Toffees dominated from start to finish and ran out 3-0 winners thanks to a brace from Jo and a Mikel Arteta penalty.

Defender Cahill was disappointed with the display and upset that Bolton had not been able to build on their victory over Tottenham a week earlier.

"It just wasn't good enough," Cahill told the Bolton News.

"I know there was a late change to the shape of the team because Ricardo Gardner got an injury but the players that were out there were more than capable of getting a result.

"I can't put my finger on it. We just weren't at the races. It was terrible.

"We got a great result last week but coming here, we had to keep pushing on.

"We can never put a string of results together. We never draw games - one thing's for sure if people come and watch us, we'll either win or get hammered. That's the way we have been this season."

Cahill believes Everton deserve praise after recovering from a hard-fought FA Cup tie against Liverpool which went to extra-time.

He said: "Credit to Everton. Their players are really good on the ball and technically gifted.

"Their wingers basically stayed up front. Mikel Arteta was brilliant but we did nothing. Everyone, including myself, will have to have a good look at that performance and ask: was it really good enough?

"We fully expected Everton to be tired but it wasn't the case - it looked as if we'd played in extra time the other night."

Gary Megson described the defeat as 'shocking' on Saturday evening and Cahill can understand his manager's comments.

"Exactly what he said is between the players and the manager but he wasn't exactly pleased at half-time and he let a few people know about it - and rightly so," he said.

"But at the end of the game it was more a case of disappointment from him. He knew the lads who went out there should have got a result for him. There's nothing you can say to that.

"The players need to respond themselves. I'll be taking a look at my own performance. As a defender, you can play really well and then make one bad decision and it'll cost you. That's what happened for me."
