Blackburn 0 - 2 Aston Villa

Aston Villa continued their march towards a UEFA Champions League berth as they triumphed 2-0 at Ewood Park to end manager Sam Allardyce's unbeaten record as Blackburn Rovers boss.

Villa impressed throughout the 90 minutes, and James Milner's goal - a sweet, curling effort, following a well-worked corner - on 27 minutes should really have been the first of many for the visitors.

Martin O'Neill's side, though, were guilty of spurning many goalscoring opportunities, with Emile Heskey twice missing the target with close-range headers, allowing Blackburn the chance to punish their wasteful opponents.

But Rovers were largely toothless in their attempts to manufacture chances on goal, and Villa were comfortable in victory with Gabriel Agbonlahor finally sealing the triumph that sees them rise to third and also secured a club-record seventh successive away league win.

Villa played with the confidence of a side riding high in the table on the back of a 12-match unbeaten run.

They carved out the first chance of the game as early as the second minute when England striker Heskey saw his effort blocked after good link-up play between Gareth Barry and Milner.
