West Ham United defender Calum Davenport is having a medical at Sunderland.
The centre-half has been a long-term target for the Black Cats, who completed the loan capture of Tal Ben Haim from Manchester City on Sunday.
Black Cats boss Ricky Sbragia has made no secret of his desire for defensive reinforcements and sees Davenport as the type of seasoned campaigner he is looking for.
It had looked as though Davenport would join Bolton earlier in the season but that move stalled when Gary Megson elected instead to sign Sebastien Puygrenier.
