Wilkins - Give Deco time

Chelsea's Ray Wilkins has urged critics to give midfielder Deco more time to settle into the Premier League.

The Portuguese playmaker's below-par performances of late have failed to pay back his £7.9million transfer from Barcelona last summer.

However Luiz Felipe Scolari has already said the 31-year-old needs more time and his number two Wilkins agrees, tipping Deco to prove his worth in the up and coming fixtures.

"When Deco first arrived, people wrote a lot of complimentary things about him," Wilkins told the Daily Express.

"Of course, everybody has a dip. We always give foreign players a year to settle here, but I don't think we're giving Deco long enough.

"He is an exceptional player who has had a lot of niggles.

"Hopefully now, since he has had some time off, he will come back and show what he is all about."

Meanwhile Manchester City have reportedly asked Chelsea to name their price for unsettled striker Didier Drogba, with the promise to double his wages.

However Wilkins was quick to snub the switch, adding: "We won't be selling Didier. Simple as that."
