Whelan confirms interest

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has told Sky Sports News the club have been approached about the availability of 'two or three' of their squad members.

Emile Heskey, Wilson Palacios and Antonio Valencia have all been linked with moves away from the JJB Stadium.

England striker Heskey's current contract is due to expire at the end of the season, sparking rumours of a possible exit this month.

Whelan, though, has stressed the need to ensure the Latics, who visit Manchester United on Tuesday evening, retain the services of their star players.

He told Sky Sports News: "We hope he [Heskey] is going to remain a Wigan player. We don't want to sell anyone of our players if we can help it.

"We have said to Emile that we would like him to sign with us for another year. And that is what we are hoping he will do.

"But we are being approached, two or three of our players are being chased. We are resisting where we can.

"It is not easy to resist when you are playing for Wigan Athletic and one of the big clubs comes for you.

"It is unfair of me or (manager) Steve Bruce to say 'sorry, you are not going anywhere'."

Whelan is also hopeful that Colombia striker Hugo Rodallega will complete his move to Wigan from Necaxa next week.

He said: "We have got the work permit. He is to fly over for his medical. He arrives on Monday. Hopefully he will sign for us on Tuesday or Wednesday next week."
