Valencia set for Wigan stay

Real Madrid have confirmed they are no longer looking to sign Wigan winger Antonio Valencia this month.

Real boss Juande Ramos was anxious to sign a new winger, following on from the purchases of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Lassana Diarra.

However, Wigan were unwilling to agree to a loan move for the player - which was Real preference.

Manchester United were also keen, amid claims they would lodge a £15million offer to fend off the Spanish giants - but it now appears any battle for the player will be on hold until the summer.

Ramos claims Valencia wanted to join the Spanish giants, but he added that the failure to conclude a deal this month would not affect his game.

"The kid was inspired by the chance of Real," said the former Tottenham chief.

"These things happen in football, but Valencia is a good professional and at Wigan he is demonstrating that and his quality."

Real sources confirmed that the move collapsed because Wigan would not agree to the loan.

"Wigan rejected the option of a loan and that is the last word on the subject," said Real source.

"With the [presidential] elections in June, it is better for us to now close the mark following the arrives of Huntelaar and Diarra."
