Southgate backed to succeed

Middlesbrough assistant manager Malcolm Crosby is backing Gareth Southgate to turn around the club's flagging fortunes.

Boro's dismal 3-0 defeat to follow relegation battlers West Brom saw the North East side slip to third from bottom in the table.

The Premier League defeat was Middlesbrough's fourth in five matches, leaving them with a haul of just one point from a possible 15.

The pressure is mounting on manager Gareth Southgate, who has been at the helm since June 2006, but Crosby believes the former England international has the character to turn things around.

"Gareth said a lot of honest things after the West Brom game at the weekend, but that's the kind of man he is," said Crosby.

"The one thing he would never do is try to hide from the facts. He was very, very frank with his comments.

"But one thing that Gareth Southgate will never do is to shirk a challenge, and he will tackle this one.

"His job - and my job - is to work as hard as we can to turn things around.

"We have got another game coming up this weekend. That's the beauty of football - you have always got another game to look forward to."
