Sbragia - I won't pay over odds

Ricky Sbragia says he will not be held to ransom in his attempts to boost his squad and insists no key players will be leaving Sunderland.

Black Cats boss Sbragia has confirmed he has lined up players to bring in during the January transfer window and has money to spend.

A defender is the priority for Sbragia, but he will not be forced into paying over the odds as he looks to move Sunderland away from relegation trouble.

"I have definitely got money to spend and if it's somebody big I can spend it," said Sbragia.

"I don't think there is any limit to what I can spend. The money is there for me if there is somebody I earmark, I'm confident of that.

"It's no secret we need defenders with Premier League experience.

"We are in dialogue with a couple of clubs, but we won't be held to ransom. I've got a figure in my mind I'll pay for someone and I won't go any higher than that."

Sbragia also revealed he will not sanction the departure of any integral members of his squad after El Hadji Diouf was linked with a move to Blackburn Rovers.

He added: "It would be a complete 'no' to bids for any of my regulars.

"I cannot afford to lose El Hadji Diouf, Kenwyne Jones or Djibril Cisse. If I do that, I'd be better off packing up and leaving the job.

"There is always speculation about players, but I would not let Grant Leadbitter go either.

"In the case of Diouf, he has never indicated that he wants to leave. He seems happy and players are happy if they are playing football. He set himself a standard against Bolton and he has to keep that up."
