Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia has revealed he hopes to bring in a new defender by next week.
Sbragia has made bolstering his defence his top priority in this month's transfer window after losing Nyron Nosworthy for up to six weeks because of injury.
Bolton defender Danny Shittu has been mentioned as a possible target and Sbragia is determined to land his target in time for next Tuesday's clash with Fulham.
"A defender has always been the No.1 priority, but we might have to do it a bit quicker now," Sbragia told the club's official website.
"I have spent a lot of time working on possible replacements in the last couple of days. Hopefully we will get one before the Fulham game."
