Rio confident of success

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is confident his side can continue their recent good form and go on to lift the Premier League title in May.

Since United returned from Japan after securing the Club World Cup they have won all six of their league fixtures sending them to the top of the table.

During that time the Red Devils have managed to set a new Premier League record for the most consecutive clean sheets and the most minutes without conceding a goal.

The England defender made a surprise return to United's backline for the 5-0 win over West Brom on Tuesday which coupled with Liverpool's 1-1 draw at Wigan put Sir Alex Ferguson's men two points clear of their bitter rivals and Chelsea with a game in hand.

"We have got to the top of the league," Ferdinand said.

"We need to consolidate on that now and try to keep the momentum going to get more points on the board.

"If we continue to do that, in the manner of the last few games, we have got a great chance of picking up some silverware."

United host Everton on Saturday looking to stretch their lead over their fellow title rivals knowing that second placed Chelsea travel to Anfield on Sunday.

Having been crowned champions for the last two seasons the England international believes the experience United have gained will benefit them in the vital run-in.

"It is there, and maybe that is the edge we have got on the other teams," the 30-year-old added.

"It is not everything, because you need that momentum, but we love playing in big pressure games."

Last season's title showdown with Chelsea could have been decided on goal difference going into the last day of the season.

In the end United finished two points clear of the West London club after they won at Wigan and Chelsea drew at home to Bolton and Ferdinand is wary that the title race may yet again go down to the wire.

"Everyone would tell you they would rather win it by 10 or 20 points, but it doesn't work like that," he explained.

"You never get anything easy in life. You have to work hard, and we know that."
