Rafa rejects rift reports

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has rubbished accusations that he rejected a new contract at Anfield because of a sour relationship with chief executive Rick Parry.

The Spaniard, who has 18 months remaining on his current agreement, turned down a new deal on Friday because he was not satisfied with terms regarding transfer activity.

It is understood that the fresh offer from American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks stated that Benitez was to be answerable to Parry regarding new recruits.

And when the former Valencia manager failed to sign the bond after two months of discussions, speculation suggested that there was an unstable working relationship with Parry.

But Benitez has rubbished the reports, stating in the News of the World: "I don't want 100 per cent control.

"I just want to work with the budget I have. I have no problem with Rick or any other chief executive.

"This is about how I can manage the club in the best way for the future. If you have £20million, you can spend £5m on four players or £20m on one player. Who knows the right value? The manager.

"If I have one chief executive or 20 chief executives, it's not the point. The manager must decide how the money is spent."
