Phelan reveals Ronaldo plan

Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan is hoping Cristiano Ronaldo's confidence is on the up after the winger ended his domestic drought.

The recently-crowned Fifa World Player of the Year was given a surprise run-out as a substitute in Tuesday's Carling Cup clash with Derby County.

Ronaldo scored United's fourth goal from the penalty spot late on and Phelan revealed the reason behind the Portuguese's introduction in the semi-final second leg.

Prior to the Derby game, Ronaldo had not scored in his previous 10 domestic appearances and Phelan admits a plan was in place to give him a chance to end that run.

"It is unusual for him to go so long without scoring," said Phelan in The Sun.

"If we had a plan, it was to get Cristiano on and hopefully get him to score a goal.

"It worked for us. It was his first penalty for a while. That's good for him and we hope now his confidence will be up again."
