Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant could be prepared to consider a loan move to Portsmouth.
Pompey announced earlier on Friday that they had agreed a fee with the Anfield outfit to bring Pennant, who is out of contract in the summer, to Fratton Park.
The former Notts County, Arsenal and Birmingham player has fallen down the pecking order on Merseyside and has made just four appearances for Rafa Benitez's men this season.
Numerous clubs were linked with a winter transfer window move to secure his services, with Real Madrid, AC Milan and Hull City all reported to be interested.
Pompey looked to have moved to the head of the queue and were due to meet with Pennant to discuss personal terms, only for the player to express his desire to remain with the Premier League leaders.
He said: "My preference is to stay at Liverpool and I'm still hoping to do so.
"There has been a lot of speculation about my future but I've always maintained my position of wanting to stay at the club."
However, Pennant may consider the option of joining Tony Adams' side on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
