Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear has confirmed that Michael Owen will be out for six weeks after suffering ankle ligament damage.
The Newcastle captain fell awkwardly on his left ankle during the club's match with Manchester City in midweek, and underwent post-match tests to confirm the extent of the damage.
"We will be without Michael now for between four and six weeks," Kinnear told Newcastle's official website.
The announcement has added to the Magpies' growing injury woes after Joey Barton was ruled out for more than two months, and Kinnear has admitted that his side face considerable problems ahead of the crunch Tyne-Wear derby on Sunday.
"It's a big blow and the injuries are mounting up, but we have to soldier on and put out the best team we can," he added.
