Martin O'Neill insists he will not pay 'extortionate' prices for any of his transfer targets.
The Aston Villa boss admits he is looking to strengthen his squad in an effort to maintain the momentum they have achieved so far.
With a top four finish, and a UEFA Champions League spot, within reach, O'Neill knows how important it is to have quality cover in all areas of the field.
He has already brought in the considerable experience of England international Emile Heskey, but is adamant that any further arrivals depend on his ability to unearth bargains.
"The fees for players in this window have surprised me and I assume, with the wages that also go with such deals, would be more than a tidy sum," said O'Neill.
"If there was a player out there who represented really great value for the club, and could play a major part in proceedings here for some considerable time, then I would have a look at it.
"Would I pay over the odds? Yes, I don't mind that, which was the case with Ashley Young who has proved great value. Would I pay an extortionate price for someone? No.
"We are not in that game. The chairman (Randy Lerner) wants to run this as a business. I am in total agreement with it. You see so many clubs now in serious financial difficulty.
"We have been pretty prudent. We spent some money last summer and if anything comes up, that represents value, I would see if we could do something about it.
"I would do something simply because we have probably the smallest squad in the Premier League. That is despite adding some players last summer."
