David James believes Portsmouth fans have every right to air their opinions at Tottenham on Sunday.
Pompey have seen Spurs lure their former manager, Harry Redknapp, and star striker, Jermain Defoe, to White Hart Lane in recent months.
As a result, the North London giants can expect to be on the receiving end of some unfavourable taunts when the two sides meet this weekend.
England international James feels that, providing boundaries of acceptability are adhered to, those supporters making the trip to the capital should not be afraid to vent their spleen and has actively encouraged them to harass the opposition.
"As long as it is not racist or homophobic, give stick," he said.
"It is football. You can't all be happy chaps; going around saying everyone's wonderful.
"As Isaac Newton said, there is an equal and opposite reaction to everything."
This week saw 11 Spurs fans charged in connection with their unacceptable behaviour during the reverse fixture between Pompey and Spurs back in November.
Sol Campbell was the target for abuse that day and while James admits a repeat of the sickening scenes which marred that game should be avoided at all costs, he insists there is a place in the game for friendly terrace banter and constructive criticism.
"We've put out a few statements in the last few weeks, but it is football," added the commanding keeper.
"You pay your way and you are entitled to your opinion."
