Hughton praise for Carroll

Newcastle assistant manager Chris Hughton poured praise on striker Andrew Carroll in the wake of Saturday's 2-2 draw with West Ham.

The 20-year-old rescued a point at St James' Park as he headed his first league goal after Craig Bellamy and Carlton Cole had cancelled out Michael Owen's opener.

And Hughton was pleased to see Carroll, who is a product of the Magpies' academy after joining the club from a Gateshead school, make an impact.

"I'm delighted for him and delighted for the supporters as well because it is always nice to see a local lad come through and ply his trade," Hughton told Sky Sports.

"If he is able to do that in the first-team it is even more pleasing. He gives us something.

"He is a young lad, very good in the air, with lots of enthusiasm."

Hughton was also pleased with the performance of goalkeeper Shay Given - who is expected to leave the club in January - and revealed there had been no new developments regarding the goalkeeper's future.

He said: "All we've seen of Shay is him coming in and training and conducting himself like he always has. As far as I know there has been no progress there."

And Hughton went on to reiterate his club's desire to strengthen their injury-hit squad before the end of the transfer window.

"We're working hard behind the scenes and we do realise we need to bring in two or three new players. We're hopeful that by the end of the transfer window we'll be able to bring them in," he concluded.
