Chris Hughton has admitted that Newcastle cannot afford to lose any of their best players as they continue to battle for Premier League survival.
The likes of Shay Given and Charles N'Zogbia have been strongly linked with moves away from St James' Park during the transfer window.
Hughton hopes there are no departures this month with the Magpies in a potentially perilous position in mid-table.
The assistant boss said: "We want to keep what we've got and we are not really in the position where we can afford to lose our best players.
"We are hopeful of keeping our best players, most definitely."
Newcastle's 2-2 draw with West Ham on Saturday left them 11th in the table but they remain just three points above the relegation zone.
Hughton was nevertheless satisfied with the display against West Ham, adding: "We have an honest group of lads who perform to the best of their abilities.
"Of course the things that are going on and have been going on for some time can be off-putting but they are things we have to cope with and we wouldn't be the only team in this position."
