Gomes remains confident

Heurelho Gomes insists the Tottenham squad are united in the belief that they can avoid relegation this season.

Spurs are currently out of the bottom three by the slenderest of margins, with the Premier League's bottom five separated only by goal difference.

The White Hart Lane outfit temporarily slipped back to the foot of the table on Saturday, before climbing to 16th after Sunday's 1-1 draw with Portsmouth.

Harry Redknapp's men could have taken all three points at home to Pompey, only for Darren Bent to inexplicably head a glorious late opportunity wide with the goal at his mercy.

Redknapp has overseen a marked improvement in Spurs' form since taking over from Juande Ramos at the end of October, but the North London side remain locked in the astonishingly tight relegation scrap.

Gomes has called on the club's fans to get behind the side and help their quest to beat the drop, even though he accepts that Spurs have been well below-par this term.

The Brazilian told the Evening Standard: "My message is believe in us because we have good players here and we know in many games we don't play very well.

"Everyone has confidence in the dressing room. Who knows who can climb up the league, but we all have confidence in getting up the table."
