Portsmouth and Bolton have had offers for Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton rejected.
As revealed by skysports.com earlier this week Portsmouth boss Tony Adams has made Barton his No.1 target as he looks to bolster his midfield and he is thought to have firmed up his interest with an approach to Newcastle.
Bolton have also expressed an interest in Barton, with Trotters chief Gary Megson thought to be a long-term admirer of the former Manchester City dynamo.
Newcastle are believed to be holding out for a sum in the region of £6.5million for Barton as they look to recoup most of the fee they paid for him in the summer of 2007.
Magpies boss Joe Kinnear is thought to be keen on keeping Barton, but could be tempted to cash in to raise funds for other signings in this month's transfer window.
Barton's agent Willie McKay has confirmed both clubs are interested in the player and that Newcastle will decide the midfielder's future.
"I am not surprised there is interest in Joey Barton," McKay told skysports.com.
"I believe Bolton made an approach for him which was rejected, while Portsmouth have also made a firm enquiry which was turned down.
"Joey is happy at Newcastle until he is told otherwise.
"If Newcastle decide to sell him and accept a bid we will deal with it then."
