Cook offers Hughes backing

Manchester City executive chairman Garry Cook believes it is too early to judge manager Mark Hughes.

Hughes is currently in his first season at Eastlands after leaving Blackburn Rovers to replace Sven Goran Eriksson.

The pressure is on Hughes to deliver following the acquisitions of Robinho, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Vincent Kompany last summer.

City have continued to strengthen in January with the addition of England international Wayne Bridge from Chelsea, while Hamburg's Nigel de Jong is currently in talks with the club.

Question marks have been raised over Hughes' future following an inconsistent first half of the season, but Cook believes that the Welshman needs time in the job before he can be truly judged.

"People say 'is Mark going to stick around?'," said. "He is the manager of the football club and is more than competent at his job.

"We are providing the tools he requires because he feels he needs more to go out and win games.

"This isn't going to happen overnight. This football club is still building.

"We are 16 weeks into the owners taking control. On a 10-year journey that is not a lot of time."
