Bolton target Miguel Veloso is also being tracked by Manchester City, according to the Sporting Lisbon star's agent.
Trotters boss Gary Megson confirmed earlier on Tuesday that he was tracking the defensive midfielder with a view to a possible bid before the end of the winter transfer window.
But Veloso's agent - Paulo Barbosa - has revealed that City could compete with Premier League rivals Bolton for the £12million-rated Portuguese.
"It is important to notice that Bolton are not alone. Manchester City have already shown interest in him," said Barbosa.
"Basically, what is happening now is that clubs are expecting to see what other clubs could offer, in order to make their own bid.
"He (Veloso) is not allowed to talk too much now about this subject but he is looking forward to seeing clubs reaching an agreement."
Barbosa does not believe that Veloso is certain to leave Sporting, but he expects a decision on the 22-year-old's future in the next 48 hours.
"What may block the negotiations? Well if the bidders do not offer what Sporting Lisbon are looking at, for example," added Barbosa.
"Probably, between today and tomorrow, there might be an outcome on this issue."
