Bruce keen to keep stars

Steve Bruce is not looking to cash in on any of his Wigan Athletic stars following their last-gasp win over Spurs on Sunday.

Maynor Figueroa's first goal for the club in second half injury time gave The Latics an unlikely 1-0 success in what looked a certain goalless draw.

Although Wigan are close to finalising the deal to bring Hugo Rodallega to The JJB, Bruce is not looking to offload any of his current stars.

A number of Wigan's players have been linked with moves like Emile Heskey and Bruce has admitted it will be difficult to retain his best players if the big clubs firm up their interest.

"I'm very, very pleased with what I've got. Obviously I want to try and hold on to what I've got as well. That's vitally important," he told Sky Sports 1.

"The last thing I want to do is dismantle it, but we've got the nucleus of a very decent squad here and as the results have shown again we must try and keep hold of them.

"For a club like ours the transfer window is a disaster area. We all know that the big boys can come and throw their money at us.

"I will do my utmost to keep hold of them, but if I keep reading about Real Madrids, Liverpools and Manchester Uniteds it's going to be very difficult."

Bruce admits Wigan's start to the game against Spurs was their worst performance of the season, although sneaking a late win has brushed over their disappointing opening to the game.

"When you score in the last couple of minutes it's a great time to get one," he continued. "It erases the sort of performance really, because it wasn't a classic.

"The first 20 to 25 minutes is as poor as we've been for a long, long time, but the one thing they've shown is they are a resilient lot and that they keep at it and don't know they're beaten, so they deserve their little reward today.

"The confidence is good. When you're in form like we're in in terms of results you always think you can nick one. I think it had nil-nil written all over from about 25 minutes in to be honest.

"We're not going to get carried away. We can't in a club like ours. It's terrific for a club like ours to sit there in seventh above teams like Spurs."
