Blues unsure of Cole injury

Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins is unsure as to the severity of Joe Cole's knee injury suffered against Southend on Wednesday.

The England international crumpled in a heap late on against The Shrimpers following an innocuous-looking challenge from ex-Blue Anthony Grant.

After a few minutes of treatment Cole returned to the fray, but after his first involvement upon returning to the pitch his knee gave way once again.

This time the former West Ham man hobbled off the field and was swiftly replaced by Franco di Santo.

Wilkins admits Chelsea do not know exactly what Cole had done and that only scans on the blow on Thursday will ascertain the full extent of the damage.

"We don't know what that is to be perfectly honest. He twisted badly as he went into the air.

"Whether that's been generated from his lower back into his knee I don't know.

"We'll assess the situation when we get back in the morning and see where we go."

After being held to a 1-1 draw by Southend at Stamford Bridge, Luiz Felipe Scolari's men made no mistake in the replay after running out 4-1 winners at Roots Hall.

Chelsea were somewhat embarrassed 3-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday and Wilkins admitted the team were desperate to put that crushing defeat firmly to bed.

"Our spirit has been fantastic and you could see that tonight with the pace in which they played and how they celebrated the goals as well," he continued.

"They have got a great spirit amongst them. They are a super bunch of guys to work with and the atmosphere around the place was really one that we wanted to put Sunday right and I think we did that this evening."
