Big Sam - Givet a great deal

Sam Allardyce is confident Blackburn Rovers have struck a 'great deal' after signing Gael Givet from Marseille.

Givet has moved to Ewood Park on loan for the rest of the season, with a view to a permanent deal in the summer.

He has struggled for first-team football at Marseille this term and Rovers boss Allardyce is delighted to have secured the France international.

"He is obviously coming in on a loan deal until the end of the season," Allardyce told the club's official website.

"We sincerely hope that it is going to be very successful so we can make that a permanent deal, which is tied into this loan deal.

"He's a quality player that for some reason or other had fallen out with Marseille. That is why we have struck such a great deal for a player that is highly rated and has been very valuable throughout his career in France.

"He's a French international and a player that I think can challenge the players here and hopefully he can do that."

However, with Givet short of match fitness, Allardyce has confirmed the defender will not be involved in Saturday's game against Newcastle United.

Allardyce added: "He won't be available for Saturday because one of the problems that we have is we struck a great deal in the first place because, for whatever reason, Marseille hasn't been playing him for most of the season.

"I think that what we have to do is improve his match fitness, which we can do in the main behind closed doors as often as we possibly can over the next few days, see what his fitness then is like from a match point of view and then include him with the squad once we think he is ready to play again."
