Adams in Barton hint

Portsmouth boss Tony Adams has given a strong indication that he would like to sign Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton.

As revealed by skysports.com earlier this week Adams has made Barton his top target in the January transfer window as a replacement for Lassana Diarra.

Bolton are also interested in signing the former Manchester City star and both clubs are believed to have seen enquiries rebuffed by Newcastle.

Adams is a big admirer of Barton and he has paved the way for the midfield dynamo to make the move to Fratton Park after revealing he has asked executive chairman Peter Storrie to bring in five new signings.

"I asked Peter [Storrie] for five players. My squad needs that, so I can play different systems," Adams told the Portsmouth News.

"I think Joey is a great man, but he plays for Newcastle.

"I give people second chances. People in glass houses and all that.

"We've had 39 people through the Sporting Chance clinic who are sober and clean. I know that Joey has been there."

Adams has also hinted that the club could make a new offer for Middlesbrough's Gary O'Neil after having a bid rejected by the Teesside outfit earlier this week.

"We made an offer for Gary O'Neil and it was rejected. It's not disappointing just yet. I'll speak to Peter and see where we can go with the deal," added Adams.

"If we can put another bid in we will.

"We have to reduce the wages by 25 per cent. That is the case for clubs across football.

"There's a budget there and I'm working it to the best of my ability."
