Adams has tight budget

Portsmouth boss Tony Adams insists he will not have a transfer war chest to spend in January.

Despite having offloaded Lassana Diarra and Jermain Defoe to Real Madrid and Tottenham respectively, the Pompey chief insists he must still work to tight financial constraints during the current window.

Those two deals are believed to have brought in over £30million, but Adams will not be handed that money to strengthen his squad.

The former England international is currently more concerned with trying to prevent a mass exodus of his top talent from Fratton Park then acquiring fresh faces, but will be hoping to bolster his ranks at some stage.

However, his hunt for new recruits is set to be made all the more difficult by the news that he will not be handed a sizeable kitty with which to work.

"There's not a lot I can do, to be honest," said Adams.

"It's tight. We haven't got millions and millions of pounds at the moment.

"I know how these deals work. I haven't got £20m to go and spend and we are paying for a few other players we have bought in the past."
