Walcott keeps the faith

Theo Walcott is confident that Arsenal's golden generation will be back on the trophy trail in the near future.

Arsene Wenger has pieced together a squad brimming with talent, but is yet to see his precocious youngsters turn that potential into silverware.

The Gunners remain outsiders in the Premier League title race this term, but have made promising progress in the UEFA Champions League and will get their FA Cup campaign under way against Plymouth on 3rd January.

Shock defeats in the league against the likes of Hull City, Stoke and Fulham have seen the doom-mongers predicting another fruitless season for Wengers' men, but Walcott believes the club have demonstrated enough promise over the last 18 months to suggest that success will arrive sooner rather than later.

"There are brilliant, fantastic, world-class young players at this club. Results like Chelsea and Manchester United were superb, so we just need to overcome the smaller clubs as well. Which we will," the England international told the Daily Express.

"Obviously many players are still learning as well. We gained such a lot of experience last year, only four points off first position.

"We just have to look back at that season, look how well we've done and we deserve to be there.

"We've got to have belief in ourselves and we'll do it."

Walcott accepts that he is learning his trade in an unforgiving business, but at just 19 years old continues to set lofty targets for the future.

Currently ruled out of action with a shoulder injury, the teenage sensation insists his main focus is to rediscover the form which earned him a regular spot in both the domestic and international arenas prior to suffering the setback.

"The main goal is just getting fit," he added.

"And obviously, when I am fit, to get back into the Arsenal team and to train well. But also, hopefully, to try and get back into the England team. They are the main targets."
