Southgate rues costly penalty

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate was left to rue a harsh penalty given against his side as they lost 3-0 to Fulham on Saturday.

Danny Murphy scored a decisive second for Fulham after Boro full-back Tony McMahon was penalised for handling inside the box.

However on second view, McMahon and his team-mates can feel hard done by for the controversial decision.

"If you look at it in real time how on earth he's supposed to get out the way I have no idea, I think it's an unbelievable decision," Southgate said.

"That's three weeks on the spin - two penalties given against us and one not given for us and they're big decisions."

But Southgate is refusing to blame the penalty for Saturday's defeat.

"I've said to the players I'm not prepared to hide behind those decisions because I don't think we played well enough today but something's got to be given in our favour at some point," Southgate added.

Boro looked solid for 20 minutes at the back, but the introduction of Bobby Zamora for Fulham turned the tie in the home side's favour and Southgate was unhappy with his team's defending.

"We weren't good enough today," Southgate admitted.

"We conceded poor goals from our point of view, we knew Fulham would be organised. They don't give much away so the first goal in a game here is crucial and we conceded a poor one.

"Fulham are a good side, but we didn't do ourselves justice."
