Sbragia relishing role

Ricky Sbragia admits he is enjoying his role as Sunderland caretaker-boss.

Sbragia watched his side score four goals for the second time in as many games as they ran out comprehensive winners at Hull City.

And while he refused to be drawn on talk of becoming the permanent manager at the Stadium of Light, the former Bolton coach admits he is revelling in his position as stand-in.

"I'm enjoying it, especially when we win - it's even better," he told Sky Sports after the 4-1 win at the KC Stadium.

"I enjoy it but don't get me wrong there's a lot that I don't know about it and I'll always be learning."

When asked whether he would like the job as Roy Keane's replacement on a full-time basis, the Scot responded: "I'm happy to keep it as it is, I'm enjoying what is happening now so we'll so what goes from here."

Sbragia admits he has been in regular contact with chairman Niall Quinn but only to keep up to date with events at the club.

"He (Quinn) speaks to me every night and keeps me in the picture so we'll just keep it going.

"I've been asked to take over (as caretaker) so I've done that - it's as simple as that."

The victory over the Tigers takes Sunderland clear of the drop zone after successive wins - with the Black Cats finding their scoring touch.

"We are out of the bottom three which is important and we have to keep up this habit of winning and the feelgood factor," Sbragia said.

"The strikers are scoring, we are getting some good balls in the box and there is a little bit of freedom in the play but as a unit we worked well in attack and defence and we always think the front two are going to score goals."

Sunderland were given an early lead at the KC Stadium through Steed Malbranque but were then pegged back by Nick Barmby's equaliser.

They went 2-1 ahead courtesy of Kieron Richardson's deflected strike then ran away with things in the closing stages following the sending off of Hull City defender Sam Ricketts.

"The longer the game went on I could see the front two were going to be a handful and Steed Malbranque contributes an awful lot to the team," said Sbragia.

"When you go 3-1 up you shut the game off and we've done that and then we've got the fourth one to seal it."
