Newcastle striker Michael Owen has revealed his motivations for postponing all contract talks until the end of the season.
Owen's deal with the Magpies is set to expire in the summer and speculation has been rife that the former Liverpool man is keen to continue his career elsewhere.
However, the 29-year-old remains adamant that the delay has been made in order to give him time to decide, and that such a hold-up would not necessarily make an exit from the North East club inevitable.
"There was a contract offered seven days ago, and as soon as it was offered the pressure on me to give a decision was intense," Owen revealed to Sky Sports.
"I decided to try to relieve some of that pressure and maybe some of it from the manager as well by saying I wasn't ready to make a decision.
"I'd only just been offered it seven days ago so I wanted to have a think about it. I've never once said I'm unhappy at the club or anything else like that so that was the purpose of coming out and saying give me a bit of time please."
Yet, with a history of serious injury problems, it seems unlikely that Owen will have too much time remaining in his career for decisions to be put off for too long.
Indeed, any potential move this summer could well provide Owen with a final chance to cement his reputation as one of his generation's finest goalscorers.
"It is a big decision for me, but that decision will be made," he insisted.
"I've asked for a little bit of time and most contracts nowadays drag out for weeks and months and I've only been offered mine days ago.
"I'd like to think that as this is a big decision in my career I could mull it over and see what I think."
