Megson left to rue misses

Bolton manager Gary Megson was critical of his team's defending and was upset Nicholas Anelka was allowed to score on his return to his former club.

Megson was also unimpressed with the chances Bolton failed to convert including Kevin Davies' glorious opportunity to give Bolton the lead when the game was goalless before Gary Cahill had a header brilliantly saved by Petr Cech in the second half.

"I'm not surprised Nic (Anelka) scored given the opportunity he had," said Megson.

"I'm bitterly disappointed in the manner in which his goal came about. It wasn't the best cross in the world, but we defended too deep.

"We knew that we would cause them problems from set-pieces and I would have expected Kevin and Gary to have scored their chances.

"We need to find a way to get results against the top four sides. We spoke during the week about Chelsea's qualities, but we found our selves 2-0 down mid-way through the first half and it was always going to be a battle after that."
