Kinnear gets go-ahead to buy

Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear has revealed that funds will be available for him to bring in new players in January and that the club have already begun identifying their potential transfer targets.

Kinnear met with the club's managing director Derek Llambias this week to discuss the club's plans for the remainder of the season, and the 61-year-old has confirmed that he will be allowed to make transfers in the forthcoming window.

"We had a meeting during the week, a very positive meeting," said Kinnear.

"I put a list of players in. At this moment in time, we are talking to numerous players.

"We are trying to get things ready for as soon as the window opens.

"We have got two or three players being covered over the weekend. We have got two or three players who we have not only spoken to their agents, but also their clubs."

With recent speculation over star players Shay Given and Michael Owen, it seemed likely that any purchases would be overshadowed by some high profile departures from the Magpies squad.

Yet despite these rumours, Kinnear has denied that there has been any official interest in his Newcastle charges in recent weeks.

"We haven't had any enquiries for any players, so I haven't had any questions to answer in that respect," added the Irishman.

In the meantime, Kinnear will have more imminent concerns regarding his side's clash with Stoke on Saturday - the long throws of Rory Delap having proved the undoing of far better teams than Newcastle this season.

However, Kinnear reckons that his involvement with the famous Wimbledon 'Crazy Gang' has taught him a thing or two about the kind of tactics that Delap and his Stoke teammates will employ.

"We had Vinnie Jones doing it for 10 years, so it is nothing new to me," said the Newcastle boss of Stoke's long throw ploy.

"There is only one way to defend it, and that is being better at the end of the throw than Stoke, it's as simple as that."
