Harry denies Defoe bid

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has denied he has tabled a bid with Portsmouth to bring Jermain Defoe back to White Hart Lane.

Spurs average slightly over a goal-a-game this season in the Premier League, leading many to believe Redknapp will look to strengthen his strike force in the winter transfer window.

The former Pompey boss has made no secret of his admiration for the 26-year-old England international who he brought to Fratton Park from Spurs during his time at the helm.

However, despite being heavily linked with a bid for the striker in the New Year, Redknapp has now clarified his position, stating no bid has been made.

"We haven't made an offer for Jermain," stated Redknapp.

"I do like Jermain but there are a lot of players at Portsmouth I like. They have a great squad of players there."

Although Spurs have improved considerably in the league following Redknapp's arrival they remain just a point above the drop zone approaching the busy festive period.

The North Londoners tackle fellow strugglers Newcastle on Sunday and Redknapp believes success against the Magpies could see them pull clear of the relegation places once and for all.

"We've got important games coming up - Newcastle, Fulham, West Brom and then Burnley in the Carling Cup," Redknapp added.

"It's a chance to get out of the bottom group really, they are all down there with us so they are big games.

"But I haven't set targets, I just want some decent results so I can enjoy my Christmas dinner - it's only as good as my team is doing."
